THE ROLE OF FRANKINCENSE IN CHANGING SOCIETIES

This workshop examines frankincense as more than a historical product — it explores its medical, cultural, ecological, and economic roles in modern societies. Researchers present new scientific findings on the healing properties of frankincense, including its bioactive compounds, medical applications, and emerging innovations such as nanoparticles and advanced extraction methods.

The program also looks at the ecological dimension: how climate change and environmental pressures affect Boswellia trees, and what conservation strategies are needed to protect natural frankincense resources. Social scientists explore how frankincense is embedded in traditions, spiritual practices, and local economies, and how its meaning has evolved over time

A key focus is bridging traditional knowledge and modern science. Participants discuss how traditional healing practices can be evaluated scientifically, how consumer safety can be ensured, and how sustainable production can support local communities without harming ecosystems.

In addition, the workshop encourages creative science communication, including podcast training to help researchers translate complex findings into accessible public knowledge.

Overall, the meeting aims to develop a holistic, interdisciplinary understanding of frankincense — combining health research, ecology, technology, and cultural heritage — and to shape future collaborative research agendas on how this ancient resin can contribute to well-being in the 21st century.
